White People Do Not Know How to Behave at Entertainments Designed for Ladies and Gentlemen of Colour
The title for this new work is taken directly from the sign that greeted audience members at The African Grove Theater Company. Established by William Henry Brown as a place for theater by and for Black people in 19th century New York, it was a home for many artists, including the legendary classical actor Ira Aldridge. This play-in-development is an exploration of the parallel between the struggles and successes of Black theater artists today and the Black theater artists of 1821.
